Squealing or Grinding
Squealing or grinding noise when you apply the brakes.
Your Volvo's brakes are the most critical safety system on the vehicle. When they need attention, the team working on them should know your vehicle as well as anyone. At Volvo Cars Hilton Head, our certified technicians perform brake inspections, brake pad replacement, rotor resurfacing and replacement, caliper service, and brake fluid flushes using Genuine Volvo brake parts. Eligible non-wear replacement parts our technicians install may be covered by our Lifetime Parts and Labor Warranty; brake pads and most rotor replacements are excluded wear items.
Brake wear can be gradual enough that drivers adapt to changes in pedal feel or noise without realizing the system has degraded. A straightforward inspection is the fastest way to know exactly where your brakes stand.
Some brake symptoms are obvious. Others are subtle enough to go unnoticed until the condition is more serious. Bring your Volvo in if you notice any of the following:
Squealing or grinding noise when you apply the brakes.
A soft, spongy, or low-feeling brake pedal.
Vibration or pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel during braking.
The vehicle pulling to one side when you stop.
The brake warning light appearing on your instrument cluster.
Longer stopping distances than usual.
Any of these symptoms can have more than one cause. None of them should be ignored. If you are uncertain whether what you are noticing is a brake issue, our team can inspect the braking system when you schedule a service appointment.
Every brake service at our center begins with a full inspection before any work is recommended. We check:
Brake pad thickness on all four corners.
Rotor condition, surface finish, thickness, and runout measurements.
Caliper function, slide pins, and hardware.
Brake fluid condition and moisture content.
Brake lines, hoses, and connections for wear or leakage.
Once the inspection is complete, your Service Advisor goes over the findings with you in plain terms: what is worn, what is fine, and what the service involves. Common brake services include pad replacement, rotor replacement or resurfacing, caliper service, and brake fluid exchange. We do not add recommendations your Volvo does not need.
Volvo designs its brake systems to specific performance tolerances. Pad compound, rotor metallurgy, caliper specifications, and hardware are engineered to work together for your model's weight, speed range, and driving conditions. This matters especially with Volvo's heavier electrified models. The XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid and EX90 carry significantly higher curb weights than conventional models, and the brake system is sized accordingly.
Aftermarket brake components can fit your vehicle physically while delivering longer stopping distances, increased noise, uneven pad wear, or rotor damage over time. Our technicians install Genuine Volvo brake parts. Eligible non-wear components may be covered by our Lifetime Parts and Labor Warranty for as long as you own the vehicle and meet the published warranty terms; brake pads and most rotor replacements are excluded.
Our service center handles the full range of Volvo maintenance and repair.
The clearest indicators are squealing or grinding when you brake, a change in pedal feel, or the brake warning light on your dashboard. Volvo recommends having your brake system inspected at least once a year, or any time you notice a change in stopping performance or brake noise. When in doubt, a brake inspection is quick and gives you a clear picture of what your vehicle needs.
A brake inspection takes under 30 minutes. A complete pad and rotor replacement on one axle typically takes one to two hours depending on the vehicle and the condition of the hardware. Your Service Advisor can give you a time estimate once we know what your Volvo needs.
Yes. We use Genuine Volvo brake parts on every brake service we perform. These parts are manufactured to Volvo's specifications for your model. Eligible non-wear replacement components may qualify for the dealership's Lifetime Parts and Labor Warranty, while brake pads and most rotor replacements are excluded wear items.
Yes. Driving on brake pads that have worn through their material causes the metal backing plate to contact the rotor directly. This metal-on-metal contact damages the rotor surface in a way that resurfacing cannot always correct, requiring full rotor replacement. Addressing brake wear early is significantly less expensive than waiting until the rotors are damaged.
Brake pads and rotors are wear items not covered under Volvo's factory warranty. However, using Genuine Volvo brake parts and having service performed by a certified Volvo technician protects all warranty coverage on surrounding components. If your vehicle is under a Volvo service plan, check your plan terms with your Service Advisor.
